Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), regulates and licenses port and marine services and facilities. It also manages vessel traffic in the port while ensuring safety and security. Our website contains information, guidelines and procedures on matters relating to the port and its operations.
TPA
operates a system of ports serving the Tanzania hinterland and the landlocked
countries of Malawi, Zimbabwe,Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),
Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
Dar es Salaam port is Tanzania's principal
port with a rated capacity of 4.1 million (dwt) dry cargo and 6.0 million (dwt)
bulk liquid cargo. The Port has a total quay length of about 2,600 metres with
eleven deep-water berths.
Tanga is the longest serving port in East Africa. It is a lighterage port with two shallow water berths. The visiting ocean-going vessels are anchored at stream buoys being a maritime safety requirement. A 354-km highway links it to sister port Dar es Salaam in the South.
The deep-water port at Mtwara was built between 1948 and 1954. Development of the deep-water port was accompanied by railway construction from Mtwara and Nachingwea.
